The Institute for Contemporary Art

The Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA) is a contemporary art museum in the heart of VCU’s Monroe Park Campus. The ICA has been at the forefront of contemporary art for over 30 years and is a leading university museum that plays an important role in Richmond, VA artistic community.

Richmond’s Museum of Fine Arts is a great place to see traditional art, but the ICA offers an eclectic mix of exhibits that highlight current issues and challenges faced by artists. The museum has hosted exhibitions on everything from street culture in Brazil to the influence of digital technology; all are thought-provoking and exciting.

The ICA is a place where art and architecture come together in the form of innovative exhibitions. The building itself, designed by Steven Holl Architects, makes use of natural light to create an open space for visitors with galleries flowing from one area to another without defined boundaries or walls.

Located at 25 West Broad Street, across from Richmond’s City Hall, the ICA is one of downtown Richmond’s best-hidden gems and offers free admission to all exhibitions. The museum is open from noon until the last Friday of each month and admission to all other exhibitions is free.

The Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA) at Virginia Commonwealth University features innovative art exhibits that fuse architecture with contemporary issues in an exciting way, making it one of Richmond’s best-kept secrets.
